Russell Chun - The New York City Subway Project

My coworker sent me to Russel Chun's site the other day. "Russell Chun is a freelance scientific art developer and multimedia Flash developer, author, and teacher. He creates visual and interactive educational media and consults and teaches others to use Flash as an effective pedagogical tool."
He's got some really great tips on Flash and design. I really liked his NYC interactive subway map for The New York City Subway Project. You may think you have seen similar in the past, but for this one, he has taken a pic at every stop, on every line. Amazing!

Here is my stop:

Design Sponge Online

I found myself needing to waste a few hours online this morning, so my coworker sent me this link. What a great site! I love the DIY section.

My favorite projects were these hemp pendent lamps...

Toxic: Garbage Island on VBS.TV

My friend turned me on to this new site called VBS.TV. Last night we watched a series called "Toxic". In "Garbage Island", the most startling of the series, we followed an independent film crew, their captain, ship doctor, and scientist, sail 3 weeks to the area of the Pacific between Alaska, Japan, and Hawaii. The currents there form a vortex, and currently the area is filled with plastic.

Garbage Island was not what I expected, and in fact the reality of it is beyond depressing.

"This is levels beyond pollution. We have changed the composition of ocean water." - Thomas Morton, VBS.TV

Please watch this 3 part episode of Toxic: Garbage Island, and share it with your friends.

If that's not enough for you, there are three other episodes of Toxic - Alberta (and the future of American Oil), Linfen (the pollution of China's air), and Napoli (Italy's trash problem)

Screen's from the film:
